Cheesy Potatoes & Savory Scones

Pull Up A Chair

Hey Reader,

What we've been up to: simple cooking, new recipes, and perfecting old favorites. Plus our latest take on internet culture.

Let's Catch Up

It's summer and there's a lot of excitement that comes with that. Fresh foods, juicy fruits, ice cold drinks, and plenty of sunshine. We've both been busy with work, but we're still finding time to cook, experiment, and update recipes behind the scenes.

Lately we've been into simple meals and snacks: a quick banana and peanut butter toast, an easy peach crumble (can't wait to make this again with juicier peaches), and a frozen French fry poutine. It's a little reminder that cooking can be casual, creative, and spontaneous, and still delicious. Let's dig in!

Quick Note

We never use AI to create recipes. All of our recipes are created and tested by real people (us) for real people (you!). The best way to support us so we that can continue making recipes is to keep visiting our blog, continue making, rating, and commenting on our recipes, and engaging with our content on social media. Thanks for being here, we're so grateful for all of you!

New Recipes

Here are a couple of our latest recipes on the blog:

Easy Crispy Potatoes with Nacho Cheese

This simple potato dish is one of those recipes that’s deceptively easy with a huge payoff in the end. The potatoes get crispy on the outside but stay fluffy in the middle, then we pile on nacho cheese, Trader Joe's soy chorizo, and green onions. It's fun, cheesy, and just over-the-top enough. (Check out the video here to watch how we made it!)

P.S. We used nacho cheese sauce from Drippy Dip. If you want to try it, you can get 10% off with this affiliate link to FoodSocial Market or by using the code CONKS when you buy it.

Sun-Dried Tomato Scones with Gouda

We've made these savory scones a few times now, but bringing them to a friend's baby shower confirmed we aren't the only ones who love them! They come together easily in a food processor (or a bowl if that’s what you’ve got) and are packed with sun-dried tomatoes and Gouda cheese for a savory bite that's great for brunch or sharing.

Food for Thought

We recently shared a food opinion on Threads that got a lot more attention than we expected. We're not going to get into specifics again, but in a nutshell it was about a preference we both share about certain types of ice cream. Some people agreed, some people disagreed, and a few acted like we'd committed a crime.

It got us thinking about how differently people behave online versus in person. Most of us would never tell a stranger they're wrong for liking a particular food, yet those conversations seem to happen every day on the internet. Both of us respect that everyone has different tastes, and we know that your food preferences are your own. We prefer to create an online community that supports differences and proves that anyone can cook what they like.

With that said, we're curious: what's a food opinion you have that would probably start an argument online? Hit reply and let us know. We promise not to judge!

What's Coming Up

We're working on a few fun things right now:

  • Perfecting one of our favorite sandwiches for the blog: roasted veggies with pepperoncini mayo.
  • Testing a few summer recipes featuring peaches, tomatoes, and corn while they're at their peak.
  • Updating older recipes with clearer instructions and easier-to-follow tips to help make cooking feel more doable.

As always, thanks for being here and happy cooking!

-Emily & Rachel

Pull Up A Chair with Rachel & Emily Conklin Hey friends! Here's what's been happening this week: we judged a local food competition, shared some new recipes, and renewed our focus on approachable meals. Let's Catch Up This past weekend, we had the pleasure of judging a food competition designed to support a local non-profit. We were alongside four professional chefs. No pressure! Restaurants and bakeries brought their best savory and sweet dishes to the competition. We spent the afternoon...

The Unofficial Start to Summer Begins with Good Food Cue the backyard barbecues, ice cold drinks, and pool side treats (if we had a pool)! Summer foods are so fun and right up our alley. People think California doesn't get seasons, which is kind of true in the traditional sense, but we have our own versions. Early summer in Southern California usually means cool, foggy mornings and breezy, sunny afternoons, the perfect weather to ease into seasonal foods. Summer foods are juicy, crisp,...
